Lorca Jolene is a self-taught artist whose paper collage art expands themes of queerness, body modification, and dark glamour that they explore in their stage performances as a nonbinary sideshow artist. They slice and rip fashion magazines, medical textbooks, and manga to make bodies formed from juxtaposing pieces that are uncanny, surreal, androgynous, and liminal. These strange bodies are queer at their core – suspended between one thing and another, made of pieces that conjoin crookedly and blur the lines between flesh and the inanimate. Some center the modified body itself as a mutable site of ambivalence and creation, where a comprehensive identity emerges as more than the sum of its parts. It is their aim to inspire curiosity about how coherent selves can emerge through bodies that carry the traces of violent origins and are formed out of chaos and contradiction. Their work has been featured at the Jackson Junge Gallery, Agitator Gallery, and Art City as well as Blood Lust Magazine.
